Mr R’s Story
‘Sometimes it just takes someone to be there’
Prior to choosing CARAH Care, Mr R’s family were looking at residential care. After the passing of his wife Mr R was diagnosed with early stage dementia. Previously a keen gardener with a love for the outdoors, his family noticed he was becoming more and more withdrawn and worried about whether he was eating or drinking enough. A fiercely independent man, Mr R was worried about having ‘carers’ in his home and doing things for him. By focusing on Mr R’s strengths and visiting a few times a day, he was soon back to doing the activities he enjoyed. We were able to modify his gardening activity so he could complete this with the support of his care worker, helping lift his mood and keep him engaged in meaningful activity. By building trust through continuity of care, this led to further improvements around nutrition with Mr R preparing a meal with care staff. By sharing this activity, staff were able to step in with the tasks that Mr R struggled to complete. The activity of a shared meal improved motivation as he was no longer ‘cooking for one’. In Mr R’s words ‘sometimes all it takes is for someone to be there’.

Mrs M’s Story
‘Home From Hospital’
Mrs M has always lived an active independent life. Sadly, following illness, she was admitted to hospital and had to spend a long time in bed while recovering. This resulted in her needing care to come home. When Mrs M started with CARAH Care she was bedbound after her long hospital stay with a large package of double-handed care. Over a six month period, we were able to work in a rehab-focused way to help increase Mrs M’s independence. By working alongside occupational therapy and physiotherapy, care staff were able to enhance the rehabilitation plan. With perseverance and expertise, Mrs M exceeded her goals to get back to being fully independent and no longer requiring any care.
Mr G’s Story
‘A New Chapter’
Mr G is a young adult living with cerebral palsy. Mr G had grown up in his family home and was coming to an age where he wanted to live independently. By working with a range of housing providers and private landlords, together with Mr G, we sourced a bungalow close to his family home. We worked with Mr G on short term, medium and long term goals. Support focused on increasing his independence. This included modifications to the kitchen and bathroom. By utilising the latest assistive technology and goal-focused support, Mr G was able to gradually reduce the amount of support he required as his independence grew.
